Wow, I had no idea they got SSI benefits. If they do it must depend on how long they are in NICU and if they have suffered any long-term difficulties or will have a life-time of developmental problems. I’d say it will depend on the severity.
Check with your local family support office or the Social Security office to be sure.
baby has to weigh less than 2lbs 2 oz then they will automatically qualify reguardless of income or other factors for medicaid to pay medical expenses and the parents get a $30 check /month while baby is in hospital which will take a month or so to come in and that’s it. Good luck
Well not all premature babies get disability it depends on if they do have problems not all premature babies have problems and if She/He does it depends on if they feel it will be a permanent disability or temporary it also depends on the parents income and the state you live in (for the cost of living assessment) but most temporary disability is $200 to 500 and permanent disability from $500 to 900.
I’m not sure if the process for premies differs that the process for disabilities, but when I applied for SSI for my son I had to fill out an application and send them a bunch of releases so they could get copies of his medical records. Then I had to answer some questions over the phone. Then they approved him and sent him a check. It took less than 6 weeks. However, a friend of mine applied for her son and it took 6 months to approve him.
The max amount a person can receive per month is $674, however I believe that is only $30 or something like that so long as they are in a hospital, nursing home, etc. They will still receive medical assistance.
Also, SSI is income based so if you as a family have too much money or assets your child will not qualify for SSI.
I would call your local Social Security Office and speak to them directly
Ask them about the application process, and income levels. I really recommend your local office because getting through to someone on the automated 800# system is horrible.
Depending on where you live your state might also supplement the amount the federal government pays.
it depends on if the baby has a disability being premature is not automatically considered a disability.then if they do qualify it depends on how much money the parents make on how much they will get. my son was receiving 200 a month then my income went up and they stopped the checks
