What could cause projectile vomit?
Question by Christine D: What could cause projectile vomit?
Wow, so last night my boyfriend started to complain of backaches that felt like they were in his kidneys. A few hours later he complained of severe cramping and pressure in his stomach. He was also pretty bloated.
Then a couple hours later he just explosively vomited. I’ve never heard anyone vomit like that, so violently and soooo much. He threw up like that three more times.
It seems like his projectile vomiting is finally over, it’s been over 8 hours now. He’s resting, but I was just wondering if I should call a doctor. He seems okay now, just sleeping.

He probably has food poisoning.
It could also be one of those 24 hour bug things.

It could easily have been a bug. But if he does this again, should most definitely be seen, as he could easily become dehydrated. When he awakens, be sure you encourage lots of liquids, water or Gatorade would be best. He may throw that up as well.
Projectile is just body’s way of getting rid of culprit ASAP and taking over contol of the body. We sometimes conciously try to hold back from vomiting. Body wasn’t going to play that game!! You said his belly was bloated, so it was full….very very full….
If this continues longer than 24 hrs, yup……doctor. But in the meantime, when he is ready to eat, consume very light and bland meals. And do keep up with clear liquids….no milk or orange juice for at least 24 hrs.
Do be ready, as you may get this as well if it is contagious. If you do get it, then you know it is viral. If you don’t, he needs to keep a note about this event on file…….
It could be any number of things. Call a hospital and ask if he should see a doctor. If he does not have diarrhea it is not likely to be food poisoning.
