Question by Ivana S: Newborn gaining too much…?
My son was born tree weeks early – 5 lb 11 oz. I exclusively breastfeed him and he is gaining about a pound per week. He is 7 weeks now and weights 12 lb 1 oz already. He is also throwing up a lot – after eating and even 2 hours after. It is seems he is throwing up all the time. I breastfeed him always only from one breast for about 10 min on demand – usually every 3 hours during the day and every 4 hours at night. He had an ultrasound done for reflax and something else I am not sure how it is called. But everything was negative. Dr. told me that I am overfeeding him and it is why he is throwing up. She told me that I should limit feedings and try to give him pacifier more often to satisfy the sucking reflex. Is the weight gain really too fast? Should I be worried that it could be something more serious? What should I do about the throwing up? Please help! Thank you.

I was allergic to my mothers breast milk.
Is that a possibility for your son?

Question by everydayimhustling: Is feeding a newborn more than 1 ounce too much?
My two week old is now eating 2 – 2 1/2 ounces of formula (or pumped breast milk) with rice cereal every 4 – 5 hours. She doesn’t spit up or throw up her feedings. Everything I’ve read seems to suggest that feeding a newborn more than 1 ounce is too much.
I’m looking for advice from other new and experienced moms alike. What’s your take?
Also, I forgot to add that the pediatrician suggested adding rice cereal to her feedings because of an acid reflux scare we had earlier this week. We haven’t experienced any problems with her feedings since we started adding rice cereal!

You should be feeding them at 2-3 hrs. 4-5 is too long to eat again. and no 2-3 oz is just right

Question by thelou: Is my newborn still hungry?
My newborn keeps giving me the ‘signal’ that he’s hungary (Lips and tongue), but when I go to give him more formula, he just spits it up and gets fussy. He’s two weeks old and my wife breastfeeds just as often. I tried giving him the pacifier but that only lasts for a few minutes before he gets fussy and spits it up. He’s constantly giving me the signal and then spitting up the formula if not throwing it up (done that a couple times now). I know he’s not hungry but why does he keep telling me he’s hungry?
I’m pretty sure he loves formula because he downs bottles left and right, I just don’t think he knows when to stop. Any suggestions?

Maybe he’s hungry but doesn’t like formula, or is allergic to it? Or maybe the signal is also a signal of spitting up? Or maybe he needs some form of stimulation?

Question by sherry h: 3 week old newborn vomiting after every feeding?
My baby girl is 3 weeks old. I had her on Parents Choice formula ever since she was 5 days old. She was taking it perfect, but now for the last 2 days she has been throwing up all of her milk after her feedings, sometimes projectile vomit. I took her to a doctor but they said keep watch on her and bring her back in 4 days time. Any idea why she is suddenly throwing up from the formula. Also, she started throwing up as soon as i opened a new can of formula (powder). The exp. date is for another year yet but could it possibly be gone bad? I cant really smell anything funny so i dont think it is. What else could be making her sick like this? Please help

My little brother had a problem like this, but it wasn’t due to the formula, it was due to the shape of his mouth. He had something called cleft palate, which you can’t actually see from the outside, that was preventing him from holding the nipple right. something about the airflow? caused him to projectile vomit after feeding. Or, you can change cans of formula and see if that helps.
