Question by joybryanhall: My 5 month old son won’t stop spitting up his formula, he keeps his veggies, oatmeal, and rice down. ?
He is 5 months old & can’t hold down formula. When he was born I breastfed him for about 6 weeks. After six weeks of hell with him getting sick all the time and being so hungary all he did was cry. [[plus I have a 13 month old when he was born, so it was hard for me to be feeding him and entertaining her, and not make her jealous of the new baby]] I talked to the doctor and they told me to try formula, (Similac advance w/ iron)) that lasted for a whole 2 weeks and he reacted the same- he kept getting sick and things. ((I must add in now that I do not care for his doctor at all, but were limited b/c of our insurance and the community we live in is small)) So I took him back to the Dr. ‘oh nothings wrong, hes just getting used to it’ & ‘burp him more often’ tried that, again nothing!… then I went to WIC and they told me Oh he most be lactose intolerant. (Im glad they were able to explain that to me, but not his own dr could)) Try Similac Isomil, So I did, that worked for about 3 months & 1/2 then he got sick on sunday, throwing up everything he ate. Was better on monday, just throwing up when he ate formula.. same on tuesday… and wed I took him to the Dr. when he wasnt back to normal, I asked if I should switch formula, he said no. Now b/c I get WIC I must have a scrip from the dr for another type of formula, but he wont give me one. He said its just the flu.. that he’ll get over it. It puts me in tears to see my son so miserable, and getting sick.. on top of that when my now 18 month old daughter sees him spit up, she gags and does so herself! Im soo stressed and have no idea how to help my son be fine with formula like he was with the soy based before he got sick.
He is even getting sick when I was just giving him 1 ounce.. trying to get him used to it again after being sick. And if I mix his rice, cereal, or oatmeal with the formula he gets sick.. but if i mix it with water he doesnt ((but the dr informed me today to not use water with a child that young b/c of ‘water intoxication’ — which i cant believe that he is NOW mentioning that to me when just one year ago, he told me he was happy i give my daughter water instead of juice when she started sitting up b/c its healthy.. ((but now all the sudden water will kill my son? wtf!?! ))
Any suggestion would be wonderful!!!
Yea, I would’ve loved to have breastfed him longer, but I couldnt relax with him & my 13 month old. And I had to return to work.. Trust me I pumped for 6 months with my daughter and it felt like I was connected to the pump 24/7[[and that was when i was just a stay at home mom]] I wouldn’t change a moment of it b/c i know it made her healther but still…There was no way I was going to be able to work, and pump for my son with my 13 month old daughter getting into things testing her new limits now that there was a new baby in the house & maintain things as ‘normal’ as they could be for her in the household.

It would have been better if you breast fed him longer kids who go on formula early have a greater chance of having digestive system problems as they grow up.
