Everything Happens for a Reason
Melisa was sobbing. She had just hung up the phone minutes before to hear the news that she had always dreading hearing. Her father had just died at the hospital he was staying at since his heart attack four days ago. Melisa was now in the car, driving to the hospital, trying to see through her tears. She hoped her husband, John, would already be at the hospital when she got there. She knew that there was no way she could go through this alone.
After arriving at the hospital from a ten-minute drive that actually seemed like hours, Melisa ran to the room where her dad was. John was kneeling by his father-in-law’s bed, praying that somehow he would wake up. Melisa first looked at John, then at her father. He looked peaceful. So peaceful, that he could have been sleeping. Before Melisa could do anything else, she ran out the door to the nearest bathroom.
Once in the bathroom, Melisa slammed the door shut and lifted up the toilet seat. She threw up. Then, threw up again. She tried to calm herself down and told herself that it was just from the shock of her father’s death that she was getting sick.
Meanwhile, Heaven was receiving a new member. Pete, Melisa’s dad, was standing before the white gates, gazing at Heaven. Then, he looked down at earth, where he had just been moments before. He saw his son-in-law kneeling at his former bed, eyes closed. Then, he saw his only child, Melisa, getting sick.
“Hard to let go, isn’t it?”
Pete turned around. At the gate, a beautiful angel was now talking to him. Pete new that it was St. Peter, the angel he was named after.
“I’m not ready to leave my daughter. Her mom, well, my wife, is in Heaven, so the only other person she has is John,” Pete replied.
“Take one more look down at earth, Pete,” St. Peter told the newcomer.
Down on earth, Melisa was still throwing up. Finally, she stopped and slid down to the bathroom floor. She closed her eyes, and in her mind saw an image of a gorgeous baby boy. He had red hair, just like her dad used to. Her dad was holding the baby boy. Suddenly, she opened her eyes and gasped.
Running back to the room where her husband was, a million thoughts ran through Melisa’s mind. As she stepped in the room, she saw John worriedly talking to a nurse. The two had only been married for three months, and John didn’t know how to handle the situation.
“Baby, are you okay? I thought you needed to be by yourself for a minute, so that’s why I didn’t come get you,” John told her, wringing his hands.
“Yeah. Yeah. I’m gonna be okay. But, there’s one thing I need, right now.”
The nurse asked if she needed to leave room to give the couple some time alone with Pete. Melisa answered her, “Actually, could you do me a favor? I need to take a pregnancy test right away. Is there any way that I could take one here?”
The nurse was puzzled, but scurried off to find one.
Melisa looked at her dad. She felt a wave of relief that everything was going to be okay. She could get through this. Then, she looked at her husband, who was giving her a confused look.
“Sweetheart, what are you doing?” John asked his wife, thinking she was hysterical.
“I think, I think we’re going to have a baby.”
However, Melisa didn’t tell John what else she was thinking. Her father died for a reason. He died so that she could become pregnant. So that another child could be born. God had sent the baby to her not to replace her father, but to carry him on.
