There has been an increase in the number of planned cesareans at gestational ages less than 39 weeks for non-medical reasons. This increase in cesareans is almost exclusively responsible for the increase in prematurity, especially “late preterm” infants. The infant mortality rate for late preterm infants is almost three times that of term infants. Research has shown that 39 weeks is optimal for babies’ brain and lung growth. Decreasing elective deliveries prior to 39 weeks will reduce our cesarean rate and reduce prematurity. This will not only save money but will result in healthier babies for North Carolina.
